Lane Lock Replacement
The Lane Furniture Co. is no longer in business. The contact information provided below no longer works.
The Lane Co., of altavista, Va., was calling for a renewed search for "Lane" and "Virginia Maid" cedar chests to replace their locks. In 1996, following reports of six children suffocating inside the chests, Lane recalled 12 million chests with lids that automatically latch shut when closed. CPSC and Lane have since become aware of another suffocation death and two near fatalities to children who became trapped in the chests when the lids closed and automatically latched shut.
Between 1912 and 1987, Lane and Virginia Maid manufactured and sold an estimated 12 million cedar chests. Cedar chests made during these years latch shut without having to depress a button. In recent years, several children have suffocated inside chests with old style locks. As a result, Lane had launched several successful programs concentrating on lock replacemnt. However, there are still an estimated 6 million chests that need the locks replaced or removed. Chests manufactured after 1987 already have the new safety lock.
All "Lane" and "Virginia Maid" brand cedar chests manufactured between 1912 and 1987 must have their locks replaced or removed. The chests are often handed down through families, and it is likely that many are purchased second-hand at auctions and rummage/garage sales.
NOTE: (January 31, 2023) United Furniture Industries (UFI) of Tupelo, Miss (that purchased Lane). is no longer administering the recall and replacement latches and locks are no longer available. CPSC urges consumers to completely remove the locks from their recalled Lane and Virginia Maid brand chests to eliminate the hazard. If and when the replacement remedy becomes available again, this announcement will be updated.
To make your chest safe, simply remove the lock catch/latch on the underside of the lid of the chest by removing two screws. The old lock will remain in the front side of the chest for aesthetics but the chest will no longer be able to latch shut.
